Cadbury Chocolate

For someone whose go-to is now dark chocolate, I still have a sweet spot for Cadbury milk chocolate.  Not just any Cadbury milk chocolate bar from anywhere, but it MUST be from the U.K.  Sorry, U.S.A, Canada and other places, your Cadbury chocolate is NOT the same.

Why is that?  If you look at the ingredient list of a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar from the U.K. and one from North America, the first ingredient is different right out of the gate.  A Dairy Milk from the U.K. lists milk as the first ingredient, and in a Dairy Milk from North America, sugar gets that coveted spot.  For my palate, milk as the first ingredient is where it’s at.  A Dairy Milk from the U.K. is FAR creamier and smoother than one from North America, where the overwhelming taste is more sugary than creamy.  If a bar has the name Dairy Milk, don’t you think milk should play the leading role?

I have often wondered why my love for Cadbury chocolate is so strong.  Why not other British chocolate like Nestlé or Mars?  They are each great in their ways, but my affection for them is just easy come easy go.  One day, I mentioned this curiosity to my mum, and I think I found out the root of my addiction.  When I was two, we were living in Marple Bridge, just outside of Manchester.  We lived on Constable Drive, and our house was at the top of a hill.  My mum would go and do the shopping with her three children in tow, and she admitted that the trip home could sometimes be where the meltdowns happened.

What was her trick to getting us home without too much fuss?  Cadbury’s Chocolate Buttons. Cadbury Buttons are the same chocolate base as the Dairy Milk bar, but in the shape of a button and the perfect size for a child to let it melt in their mouth.  As my mum would set out up the hill with me in a pushchair and my brother and sister walking, she would give us a few chocolate buttons, which she said immediately calmed us and had us smiling.  For nostalgia, I still buy packs of chocolate buttons when I am in the U.K.

To this day, if I need comfort or a pick me up, Cadbury chocolate always does the trick, but I try not to keep this treat at home, for if I do, I will comfort myself far too often!

Cadbury Dairy Milk

In my mind, it just doesn’t get better than Dairy Milk, when it comes to milk chocolate.

Cadbury U.K. has come out with a reduced sugar Dairy Milk in the past few years, and I LOVE it.  They simply reduce the sugar and do not replace it with any sweeteners that interfere with the creamy taste.

Cadbury Flake & Cadbury Twirl

A Cadbury Flake is, as the name states, flakey.  Its unique texture makes the consuming experience different from the Dairy Milk bar, even though it is essentially the same chocolate. A Twirl bar is the Flake’s more stable cousin.  If you want a Flake without the sometimes-crumbly mess, then reach for a Twirl.  The Twirl bar is a Flake enrobed in a thick layer of milk chocolate.  There is no chocolate lost in the form.

Cadbury Wispa

A Whispa bar is similar to an Aero – it is filled with bubbles, creating an airy-like texture to the chocolate.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Varieties

Over the years, Cadbury has come out with Dairy Milks with various additions.  Mint Crisp and Tiffin are two of my favourites when straying from just the pure Dairy Milk.
